The adults track

Four sessions for running this with adult educators, in staff PD, pre-service, or coaching.

Who this is for
Whoever is facilitating. Adult participants, any subject, no technical background needed on either side.
Shape
Four sessions of fifty minutes, or one half day with breaks where the session breaks fall.
Before you run it
Do Build One yourself first. You cannot hear a weak answer until you have given one. Build One

With learners rather than colleagues, the accounts and the conversation with families change. Conditions covers what to settle before that session.

What makes this track different to run is not the material. It is that it asks anyone who already has a working method of their own to set it aside for fifty minutes.

What the four sessions do

Session one plans and builds nothing. Some rooms find that unsatisfying and say so; it is still the session that matters. Session two builds and judges. Session three hands the work to somebody else and watches. Session four is about what each person will actually run afterwards, because professional development that ends in general enthusiasm changes nothing.

The thing to watch for

The tool tends to open before the plan is finished.

Trial and adjustment is a good method, and it assumes you can recognise a bad result. That assumption is what breaks here: a fluent collaborator working on a subject you half know produces something that reads as fine. The method is not the problem, the conditions are.

You do not have to diagnose anyone. Every session in this track has a version of this in its Look for, phrased as something you can see rather than something you have to infer.

Running it as a half day

The four sessions run back to back with breaks where the session boundaries are. Two things change.

Keep the gap between planning and building. If session one flows straight into session two, people plan with a tool open in their heads and the plan gets shaped by what they think the tool will do. A coffee break is enough.

And do not compress session four. It is the first thing that gets eaten when a half day overruns, and it is the only session whose output survives the week.

What you need

Printed boards for session one, a few cards each for session two, and drills for sessions two and three. Devices from session two onward, one each if you can, shared if you cannot.

Nothing else. The instruments are paper on purpose.
