Session 4

What it remembers

Who
Learners whose page holds on to something, which is anyone who built at Remix or Generate. This period exists because of the rung they chose.
Where this sits
Discern and Develop
They leave with
  • A written answer to what their page keeps, for how long, and who can see it
  • One change made on the basis of that answer, or a written reason for leaving it
  • The ladder question answered for their own rung

The arc: 45 minutes

  1. 5 min

Ladder back on the wall. Read the know column for the top two rungs aloud.

What does your page keep after a visitor closes it?

  2. 10 min

Each learner writes the three answers for their own page. Keeps what, for how long, visible to whom.

  3. 10 min

Swap with a partner. Try to find something the other page keeps that its builder did not list.

  4. 12 min

Make one change, or write down why the answer is fine as it stands.

Would you be comfortable if a visitor could see what the last visitor left?

  5. 8 min

Close on the question the whole track has been building to.

What is on this page that could only have come from you?

Look for

  • Answers that describe what the page shows rather than what it stores. Those are different, and the gap is the whole period.
  • "Forever" written under how long, usually because nothing was decided rather than because forever was chosen.
  • Pages where one visitor can see what a previous visitor left. That is a real finding and it is why the swap is in the arc.
  • Learners who conclude their page keeps nothing. Sometimes accurate at Reveal or Navigate; worth checking against what the tool actually built.
  • A change made to the page rather than to the answer. Both are legitimate; the write-up is what matters.
  • The three answers are the check. Point at one and ask how they know it is true rather than how they think it works, because those come apart here more than anywhere else in the track.

Tips

  • This is not an internet safety talk and it goes badly as one. The question arrives from the page the learner built, which is what makes it answerable.
  • The partner swap finds more than solo inspection does, and it costs ten minutes.
  • If a page genuinely keeps nothing, the period still works. The answer "nothing, and here is how I know" is the same skill.
  • Running short, cut the swap and keep the three answers and the closing question. The closing question is the one the whole track has been walking towards.

Print before the session

This period exists because of the rung. Remix and Generate hold on to information, and a page that holds something raises a question the lower rungs never raise.

The question arrives from the build rather than from a policy. A learner who has just watched their own page keep a stranger's answer has a reason to care about where it went, and that is a different conversation from being told about data in the abstract.
