Session 3
Make it remember
- Who
- Anyone aged 13 and up. Complete on its own, though this is the rung with the most that can go wrong, so a newcomer may want the simpler version.
- Where this sits
- Define and Decompose and Direct and Discern and Develop
- They leave with
- A page that holds on to something a visitor left
- Three written answers about what it keeps, for how long, and who can see it
- A board, going home, with the ladder question answered for their rung
The arc: 90 minutes
- 5 min
Newcomers get a board and a choice. The bottom rungs are still available to anyone who wants the shorter version.
- 15 min
Subject and board. Same start as always.
What do you know about this that nobody else in the room does?
- 10 min
Remix and Generate, one example each. Name what each one keeps.
- 10 min
Card, then before building, the three questions written down.
What will this keep, for how long, and who else can see it?
- 25 min
Build it.
How would you know if that came back wrong?
- 15 min
Swap screens. Try to find something the other page keeps that its maker did not write down.
- 10 min
Fix one thing or write down why it is fine. Then the closing question.
What is on this page that could only have come from you?
Look for
- Three answers describing what the page shows rather than what it stores. Those come apart at this rung and the gap is the session.
- "Forever" under how long, where nothing was decided rather than forever being chosen.
- Pages where one visitor can see what a previous visitor left. The swap finds these; solo inspection usually does not.
- Makers who say their page keeps nothing. Check it against what was actually built, because at this rung it often keeps more than intended.
- Anyone who has drifted back down to Reveal. That is a legitimate answer to the question and worth saying so.
- Point at one of the three answers and ask how they know it is true, rather than how they think it works. Those two come apart here more than anywhere else in the track.
Tips
- This is not an online safety talk and it goes badly as one. The question arrives from the page in front of them, which is what makes it answerable.
- The swap finds more than solo checking, and it is worth the fifteen minutes even in a short session.
- A newcomer can run this at Reveal or Navigate and still get a full session. Say that at the start.
- Running short, cut the swap and keep the three answers and the closing question. The closing question is where the whole track lands.
Print before the session
Same loop again, at the top of the ladder. The page now keeps something after a visitor has gone, which raises a question the lower rungs never do.
The three answers are written before the build rather than after it, because deciding what a thing should keep is a design decision and not a review step.
